We were forwarded the following video, entitled “Soul of Key West,” and we’ve been smiling ever since. In case you need a pick-me-up, here it is:
After ten days of almost nonstop gloomy weather the forecast is looking carefully optimistic for the rest of the week, with partial sunny days on the schedule for this upcoming weekend. Winds should continue to die down through the week, going from 25mph today to a respectable 10mph or so on Sunday. The likelihood of rain won’t disappear completely, but the precipitation chance does seem to be on its way down, with today’s 60% chance of rain falling to a 10% chance by Saturday. That means patches of sun and blue sky should become more frequent, so get ready to dash over to the beaches at the first sign of sun! And when in doubt, duck into one of Key West’s fabulous museums or indoor gardens for a bit of a rain break. We love the Butterfly Conservatory, Casa Antigua, the Little Truman White House and even the occasional midday screening at the Tropic Cinema. Have fun out there!
Looking for a place to beat the heat tonight? Key West’s own Tropic Cinema continues its “Cool Classic June: Lovable Losers” movie series with a screening of the 1984 Classic “Revenge of the Nerds.” Starring Robert Carradine, Anthony Edwards and Timothy Busfield, this classic losers-seek-revenge flick is only showing for one night! So hurry down to the Tropic Cinema (located at 416 Eaton St.) where tickets are only $9.50 for non-members (members pay $6.50.) Show starts at 7:00pm. For more information, call 305-295-4393.
For those of you looking to spend your Friday evening in a quieter setting, Key West author Rodney Ross will be signing copies of his new book, “The Cool Part of His Pillow,” a heart-wrenching and hilarious new novel which speaks on love, loss and the perseverance of the human spirit. Much loved on the island of Key West, Ross will meet readers and new fans in person tonight, from 6:00pm to 9:00pm, at Fleming & Simonton Streets (across from the Cafe Marquesa.) Wine, champagne & light hors d’oeuvres will be served.
Here a Parrot Key Resort, we love a good fireworks display. Nothing seems to bring family together as well as crowding together on a blanket under the stars, “oohing” and “aahing” at the magical show above. Which is why we’ll be going to the following event tonight, and you’re welcome to join us!
Tonight, June 22nd, from 5:00pm – 8:00pm, the BottleCap Lounge will be hosting a benefit happy hour called “It’s A Big Sky.” All proceeds from the happy hour will go to help the Key West Rotary in their quest to fund the island’s 4th of July Fireworks display. Join locals and visitors as they enjoy drink specials, snacks, raffle & door prizes, a large silent auction and much more! This event is sure to be a fun-filled evening. We’ll see you there!
The BottleCap Lounge is located at 1128 Simonton Street Key West, FL 33040. For questions or more information, call 305-304-4912.
To our Parrot Key guests who are searching for something to do tonight, we are happy to tell you: entertainment is only a quick walk away! Zip on over to our neighbor, the Ibis Bay Waterfront, who will be screening the 1935 classic “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” which famously won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography and features some of yesterday’s top stars like Mickey Rooney and Ian Hunter.
Tonight from 6:00pm to 9:00pm, join art lovers from across the island as they converge on White Street for Key West’s favorite open studios event. All participating galleries along White St., from Southard to Truman, will welcome guests– with some offering free wine and snacks to keep spirits high. Mingle with locals and visitors alike as you view new works on display at favorites such as Harrison Gallery (825 White St.), Stone Soup Gallery & Frame Shop (802 White St.), The Studios of Key West (600 White St.) and more.
For questions, call 305 294.8488
Key West’s citywide speed limit change, in which all residential streets now have a speed limit of 20mph (a full 10mph slower than the previous limit) goes into effect TODAY, which means if you plan on taking your rental car (or rental electric car, for that matter) into town, please be mindful of these new speed limits! Nothing ruins a vacation faster than a speeding ticket.
