BottleCap Happy Hour to Benefit the Key West Firehouse Museum

We love a good happy hour. And when it benefits a great local cause, we love it even more! So swing by the BottleCap Groove Lounge tonight from 5:00pm to 8:00pm for a fun & fundraising happy hour to benefit the Key West Firehouse Museum, slated to open to the public in January 2o013. The benefit will feature drinks, appetizers, a silent auction, raffles and more. Come show your support for Old Fire House Preservation, Inc., a nonprofit whose funds support the restoration and maintenance of the Old Firehouse Museum at the corner of Grinnell and Virginia Streets. This historic site housed Key West’s own Firehouse No.3, a 100-year-old firehouse that now stands as a museum and treasured landmark. With private openings and functions having displayed the museum’s collection of artifacts to a select few over the years, Old Fire House Preservation, Inc. looks forward to amassing enough funds to support the public opening of the museum next year, so that all may come and enjoy its beauty and history.

Art Events in Key West Tonight

Here at Parrot Key Hotel & Resort we have a passion for art. Which is why we’re especially excited for all the exciting openings and events happening tonight in Key West! Art lovers will have plenty to choose from today, as a number of exhibitions open to the public for the first time. (A little party here and there doesn’t hurt, either.)

First off, The Custom House Museum will open two new exhibits tonight with a party open to the public  from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Come mix & mingle as two fabulous exhibits– “Celebrating the Colors of Key West,” the art of Jack Baron, and “Coping with Depression —the WPA Artists in Key West”– are opened to the public. While both shows will stay open through November, tonight is your first chance to catch a glimpse of these beautiful and important works.

In addition,  the Key West Art Center presents “Martha Watson Sauer: WPA Teaching Artist,” opening tonight in conjunction with the WPA exhibit at the Custom House Museum, located a quick walk away.

Also in the area, the Key West Aquarium (which many don’t know was a WPA project completed in 1934 and which contains fascinating frescoes) will stay open until 7 p.m. with free admission to those attending either of the above receptions.

Finally, tonight’s “Art Walk On White” will have galleries along White St. open to the public for wine, appetizers and a dazzling array of new works by artists at the Studios of Key West, Harrison Gallery, and more. Take a walk down White St. and see what you can find!

With so many fun events to consider, tonight’s bound to offer something for everyone. So what are you waiting for?

“Fast Times at Ridgemont High” screening tonight

The epic slacker 80’s film “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” was an instant classic upon its 1982 release. Tonight, for one night only, relive the comedy as the Tropic Cinema screens this hilarious movie at 7:00pm for all to enjoy.

Written by Cameron Crowe and starring an impossibly young Sean Penn, “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” chronicles a year in the life of prototypical high schoolers at the fictional Ridgemont High School, following their ups and downs and featuring some uproarious lines that have been quoted for decades afterward.

Located at 416 Eaton St., the Tropic Theatre is Key West’s favorite independent movie theatre. Get there early for good seats and an extra slice of frozen Key Lime Pie– trust us, it’s worth it.

Are you ready to crawl?

Get out your plastic bibs and send those friends with shellfish allergies to the other side of the island: Lobster Crawl is tonight! In keeping with the Key West LobsterFest tradition, this annual culinary crawl down Duval St. is not to be missed.

From the official LobsterFest website (found here): “Immediately following sunset, join hundreds of party people for a stroll down Duval Street. Everyone receives an Official Lobsterfest T-Shirt and souvenir lanyard, plus 2 for 1 Coronas and 3 Olives cocktails! Proceeds benefit Key West High School Scholarship Fund. Purchase tickets from the Ship to Shore store at the Rick’s/Durty Harry’s Entertainment Complex, 202 Duval St. 11am til 2am Daily”

Get there early to beat the crowds, and remember: to get melted butter stains out of clothing, apply dish soap directly to the stain and stay away from the dryer. We have experience with this one, and after tonight’s crawl, we have a feeling you will as well.
