You might have noticed that our little Key West Hotel has a big art collection– we take a lot of pride in supporting local artists and always try to find time to visit the art events around town. Tonight we’ll be heading over to the Walk on White, a fun and laid-back event celebrating all the fantastic works of art on White St.
Why not take a leisurely stroll down White Street to see what artists have been up to… and while you’re at it, check out the open artist studios at the Armory & 610 White Street along with a special residency cottage open house at 607/609 Ashe Street! Enjoy free wine, light snacks and as much talk about “the painter’s intentions” as you can possibly stand.
Have fun out there!
Every year, our little island of Key West plays host to a number of exciting festivals– from pirates to speed boats, there’s a celebration to fit everyone’s taste. The biggest, and most popular, is of course our legendary Fantasy Fest– ten days of crazy costumed parading, partying and other debauched activities. But equally fun is the festival that marks the imminent opening of Fantasy Fest: Goombay Festival, a celebration of the tastes, sights and sounds of Caribbean culture. We impatiently await the opening of Goombay each year–a family-friendly festival that offers incredible food, music, dancing, performances and a true sense of community– and we’re so excited that it’s finally only a few more days away!
For two fabulous days beginning this Friday, October 19th, stroll down the length of Petronia St. and see how long your willpower lasts (ours usually gives in right around the time we see the first foodstall. Conch salad, anyone?) This festival, the end of which marks the official beginning of Fantasy Fest and all its crazy glory, is the perfect way to dip your toe into the Key West festival pool. We’re certain you’ll love it.
The festival runs all day and offers something for everyone. This Friday, be sure to head down to Petronia Street and learn all about Caribbean culture… we’ll save some Conch salad for you, if you’re lucky.
The Studios of Key West will host the opening reception for their new showcase, “Emerge,” tonight at 6:00pm.
Enjoy the premiere of written, performed and visual art presented by TSKW studio artists and their invited guests. “Emerge” marks a collaboration between TSKW artists and emerging artists, invited by residents to show their work along side their own.
Swing by the studios for your first glimpse of this exciting exhibition, which runs through November 10th. You can find the TSKW at 600 White St.
Ladies, rejoice! Key West’s annual festival for women is back with a schedule full of fabulous events that are sure to delight. With a wide variety of activities to satisfy any whim– including dance parties, water excursions, art exhibitions, theatre performances, live music, movie screenings and more– WomenFest offers a jam-packed roster of events that lesbians and their straight allies alike will enjoy.

One of the most iconic films to come out of the 80’s is back in theatres for one night only! Grab your leg warmers, practice your dance moves and get ready for fun as Key West’s favorite independent movie theatre, The Tropic, screens Flashdance tonight at 7:00pm. Watch as Jennifer Beals welds steel by day and dances by night in a cult classic that will have you singing “What a Feeling” by the time the credits roll.
The Tropic Cinema is located at 416 Eaton Street in downtown Key West.
Key West has some truly fascinating museums to visit– we’ve lived here for years and we still haven’t seen them all! Which is why we’re so excited that this weekend South Florida’s National Public Radio affiliate, WLRN, and the Monroe County Tourist Development Council have come together to offer free or discounted admission to several local museums and sites. This is a great way to explore some of the best that Key West has to offer with as little impact to the wallet as possible. Most of the participating venues are kid-friendly and fun for the whole family, so pack a snack and get out there!
For three days only, residents and visitors can simply log onto www.wlrn.org and select the “Florida Keys and Key West Museum and Attractions Weekend” link, where they will be prompted to print out their voucher. Hurry– there’s a lot to see in just three days!
Participating venues here in Key West include the following: Key West Aquarium, Key West Shipwreck Treasures Museum, Harry S. Truman Little White House, Key West Art Center, Key West Garden Club at West Martello, Key West’s Oldest House Museum, Ripley’s Believe It or Not, Key West Museum of Art and History at the Custom House, Key West Lighthouse & Keeper’s Quarters, Fort East Martello Museum.
Here at Parrot Key Hotel & Resort we have a passion for art. Which is why we’re especially excited for all the exciting openings and events happening tonight in Key West! Art lovers will have plenty to choose from today, as a number of exhibitions open to the public for the first time. (A little party here and there doesn’t hurt, either.)
First off, The Custom House Museum will open two new exhibits tonight with a party open to the public from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Come mix & mingle as two fabulous exhibits– “Celebrating the Colors of Key West,” the art of Jack Baron, and “Coping with Depression —the WPA Artists in Key West”– are opened to the public. While both shows will stay open through November, tonight is your first chance to catch a glimpse of these beautiful and important works.
In addition, the Key West Art Center presents “Martha Watson Sauer: WPA Teaching Artist,” opening tonight in conjunction with the WPA exhibit at the Custom House Museum, located a quick walk away.
Also in the area, the Key West Aquarium (which many don’t know was a WPA project completed in 1934 and which contains fascinating frescoes) will stay open until 7 p.m. with free admission to those attending either of the above receptions.
Finally, tonight’s “Art Walk On White” will have galleries along White St. open to the public for wine, appetizers and a dazzling array of new works by artists at the Studios of Key West, Harrison Gallery, and more. Take a walk down White St. and see what you can find!
With so many fun events to consider, tonight’s bound to offer something for everyone. So what are you waiting for?
They started with thirteen and have narrowed it to the final three– now’s your chance to get a front row seat when the finalists for Aqua’s “Aqua Idol” competition compete for first place and some pretty special prize packages worth thousands of dollars!
After 13 grueling weeks, these talented stage performers have strutted and sung their way to the top three. Watch as Larry Blackburn, Karen Weber and Mary Hancock sing a variety of songs for their final chance to be crowned the official Aqua Idol, with the competition getting started at 6:30pm sharp.
All proceeds from this fun and fabulous event will go to fund Helpline, an incredible charity whose free hotline serves those in crisis:
“HELPLINE’s official mission is to provide confidential and anonymous crisis intervention, education, and information and referral services to the residents and visitors of Monroe County and the homeless. They also provide telephone reassurance to the elderly and disabled. Services are free, and phones are manned by volunteers who have undergone extensive training. As well as answering thousands of calls each year from people with nowhere else to turn. HELPLINE also offers free family caregiver training and support groups.”
Tonight’s Aqua Idol finale will also feature special performances from judges, previously crowned Idols, and more!
Aqua is located at 711 Duval St., in downtown historic Key West. The show starts at 6:30pm sharp– get there early for a prime seat and bring as many singles as your wallet can hold!
It’s the first Friday of the month, which means it’s First Friday Art Stroll time– join residents and tourists for a leisurely stroll down Duval St., when neighborhood galleries between the cross streets of Truman and United will open their doors to both art and free refreshment fans alike. This entertaining monthly tradition is a great way to meet new friends, hobnob with artists and get a feel for the unique art scene that Key West is famous for.
Festivities begin around 6:00pm. Enjoy!
Key West’s favorite vegetarian & vegan-friendly restaurant, The Café, will host Local Art Night tonight from 6:00 – 10:00pm. Enjoy live music as you peruse work from local art stars such as Key West Honest Works Pottery, Marlene Konig, Clara Dara, Ginger Green and more. This fun & fascinating event is only for one night, so don’t miss it! Head down to The Café a 509 Southard Street..and by the way, we guarantee a big, happy post-feast smile after gorging on any of The Café’s fabulous dishes, so maybe make your visit tonight the first of many more.
